Wellington as a Fair Trade city
There are over 1,000 Fair Trade towns in more than 20 countries, a fair trade town is a town, city, village, island, borough, country, zone, district or region that has made a commitment to supporting Fairtrade and using their products with the Fairtrade mark. Fairtrade has far over 100 retailers and many supporters in Wellington.
In the late 2009 Wellington, New Zealand had become a Fair Trade city. Due to lots of City council and community support Wellington had officially became the first Fair Trade city in Southern Hemisphere. Since then we have then Wellington has been a part of the international Fair Trade economy and have been contributing to a trade system that is based on fairness and justice. When you buy Fairtrade products you are helping millions of farmers that are struggling to work their way out of poverty and getting them a paid a fair price for their work. The Fairtrade logo is instantly recognisable, the label is an independent consumer guarantee that a product is Fairtrade.
